Nevertheless, Not My Will, But Thy Will, Be Done

We find ourselves at the foothill of an amazing frontier called, the new year, filled with new purpose, promise, and endless possibilities. However, we must decide how we will live, because the era in which we live, idolization of individualism and individual truth is paramount and reigns supreme above all else. The era in which we live is no longer about family, clan, and village community, as it is about the individual self-preservation and super ego who is all about me, myself, and my legacy. The era in which we live, the idea of dieing on the altar of our constitutional freedoms to forge a brighter and better future for our native sons and daughters is ludicrous, as individuals have elevated themselves in value far above family, clan, and village community. The era in which we live, families, clans, and “close-knit” village communities which once were, are mere cold hollowed homes coexisting side-by-side, siloed by living virtual lives elsewhere through social media. The era in which we live, cancerous corruption is coveted in every seat of power, and no individual will risk life or limb for the greater good of unapologetic absolute truth, as there is too much skin in the game to lose. And the era in which we live, proliferation of fake news blur lines which once were clear and distinct contrast between probity and perversity. So, it is no surprise that families, clans, and “close-knit” village communities across this great nation which once were unbreakable, like thick glacier, thaw and cracks over time and breakup in to chunks of islands, adrift by estrangement and idolization of individualism.

Therefore, as the body and bride of Christ, we must model the quintessential marks of God’s covenant village community, who do not value themselves above all else. Scripture says, “But I consider my life of no value to myself; my purpose is to finish my course and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of God’s grace.” We do not gloat or glory in ourselves, as the ministry of reconciliation is not about us but the overwhelming never-ending love of Jesus Christ which calls us from children of wrath into children of light. We are not afraid to pay the ultimate price by laying our lives on the line for the souls of family, friends, and neighbors whose lives are on the precipice of eternal damnation. For we like the Suffering Servant confess, nevertheless, not my will, but thy will, be done.
