I CAN’T BREATHE

Thoughts in memory of Eric Garner killed by a police officer’s choke hold while attempting to apprehend him.  The Department Of Justice did not find the police officer at fault  in Eric Garner’s death.

I CAN’T BREATHE

IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America,

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness…”

The aforementioned profound freight of words used to frame such universal eternal truths by the founding fathers of our Christian nation seems unrivaled, unparalleled and untouchable even by the best and brightest in the 21st century.  However, I still ponder and wonder to this day, why the Black man and Red man were not included in this living document penned by mortal men?  How could those with such savant, sapient and sagacious endowment incur such an egregious omission?  How could those with such insight and discernment fail to see the irony in the height of their revolutionary war against The United Kingdom of Great Britain aka the unconquerable gargantuan Goliath of their time?  And how could those of such grand and great stature break bonds with their binding words which expressed that all black bondmen who bear arms in allegiance against “The Royal Crown” shall be emancipated from the eternal serfdom of slavery and become freemen by means of manumission?  For the Black man aka “The Buffalo Soldier” was justified in obtaining his freedom as he of his own volition gallantly fought with an uncommon valor to the last bayonet, to the last bullet and to the last breath!  He too, saw the rockets’ red glare.  He too, saw the bombs bursting in air.  And he too, recognized that it was proof that the nation’s flag, his flag was still standing streaming through the perilous fight intrepid, undaunted and remained resolute until freedom was realized through the endless night of revolutionary’s war.

Alas, it is with great sadness and heavy heart that I must regrettably say, freedom did not ring from every mountain side and the Black man still could not sing her song of liberty as we were not counted worthy to be among the caste of brotherhood from sea to shining sea.  For America did not hold true to manumission of the Black man.  Therefore slavery multiplied during and after the years of her revolutionary war and uprooting the deep seated systemic roots of entrenched pro-slavery legislation from the highest court of law in the thirteen colonies of the United States of America was a daunting herculean task.  For legislation still penned the Black man as mere property and chattel akin to hogs, horses and hoes to be used at will, disposed of at will and/ or sold without discretion at will.  His life worth was still only 30-40 British pounds.

Could this still be the psychology of our United States of America’s DOJ?  Are we not decedents of Adam who is flesh of our flesh and bone of our bone?  Are we still only worth 30-40 British pounds?  Is Eric Garner only worth 30-40 British pounds?  Are there two Americas and two books of justice?  Has America truly been emancipated from her sin of slavery?  Although we were birthed and battle built for such a time as this, I don’t know about you right now but I’m truly challenged by these thoughts and the combustible social climate of our life and times in which we live.  Please, pray for me as I need to take time and take everything in prayer to God Almighty as “I CAN’T BREATHE”.
